CPS' 2021 Community Budget Meetings
CPS will hold town hall meetings to engage families around the district's budgeting process. These meetings will provide community members and all interested stakeholders with an overview of CPS' current funding methodologies and other aspects of the FY2021 budget. Attendees will also be able to share the needs of their school community and offer suggestions on how to make the district's school funding process more equitable, transparent, and sustainable.

Classroom Connections: Christiansen
At the end of January, the entire seventh grade class gathered together for the first time this school year in a virtual culmination of their two week artist-in-residency with Silk Road Rising's EPIC program.
The residency began with teaching artists and playwrights, Jarrett King and Lindsay Hopkins, sharing their expertise and experiences of monologue writing with our students. Through modeling and exposure of the craft, students journaled about the events from the past year and chose one personal topic that had a profound effect on their lives.
Students developed characters to tell their stories of isolation, acceptance, being misunderstood, anxiety, loss of loved ones, and racial injustice. Once characters were created, they went to work drafting, sharing, peer editing and revising their own monologues.
To celebrate their stories, professional actors were invited to bring them to life. About 50 of the students' monologues were selected to be performed at our virtual staged reading. We are so proud of the courage, maturity, and dedication of our seventh graders for telling, and maybe more importantly hearing the stories of their peers helping them to embrace multiple perspectives and build a stronger sense of empathy.

Classroom Connections: 3rd Grade
This week all third grade classes started their 6 week residency with Playmakers Laboratory. This amazing organization brings drama, creative writing, self-expression, and more to our students. We are so excited to work with them again this year, and we are impressed with how they can still deliver an exciting and interactive program through a screen. This first week the students learned about the "Playmakers Agreements" and are already feeling excited and eager about writing.
